Seasons of Style

Posted on January 25th, 2008 by Toms Price Home.

Watching the snow fall quietly outside brings a sort of hush and peace to the landscape utterly unlike the colorful exuberance of spring or shimmering heat of summer. The exact same spot on the map can exhibit a wildly different persona each time the seasons change.

If you think about it, styles of decorating express different seasons. We’ve watched them change — the bright florals with colorful trims (summer); rich chenilles in brown or brick tones with jaquard and leather accents (fall); sophisticated tone-on-tone combinations with metallic accessories (winter).

So what season would you say inspires your home in its style?

I’d have to say summer is my season. Peach in the living room with soft red plaid , “tomato soup” in the dining room, a combination of both in the kitchen with warm wood furniture tones everywhere rather than darker mahagony or teak. Even the bedrooms in cooler shades of Wedgewood Blue and medium green feel more summery – also with warm or light wood toned furniture.

Summer is my season on the entire first floor-not summer here in the midwest, but in Barcelona, Puerta Vallarta, Andalusia, and Marrakkesh …it is hot-sand,spicy pepper, serene ocean, cobalt blue, and banana leaf -the colors with life. Upstairs in our bedroom is a different story…we like to unwind in the simplicity of black and white. It is serene with dramatic contrast like our winter.

The rich colors of Autumn have always been an inspiration to me – burgundys, oranges, browns. This is not all over my house, but it is most evident in the rooms which I feel most comfortable in.

Spring greens and yellows are in my sun room entry way with a pale blue on the tray ceiling. The living room transitions into more summer to autumn tones and cooler winter colors in the guest bedroom.

I think our home would be closest to fall/winter. We use our fireplace frequently and enjoy the feeling of the warm, deep burgundys, golds and greems in the main living areas. Although in other parts of the house there is a lighter/airy theme closer to spring.
