The process of choosing a style direction need not involve renting a dumpster. What it does require is some very deliberate decision making. Here is a long list of style options. Take a look and figure out which you might enjoy in your home.

Mission (Arts & Crafts Style), Romantic Decor, British India, French Moderne, Contemporary Style, Room Themes (i.e. nautical, vegetable), Cottage Style, Rustic Decor, English Country, French Country, Swedish Style, African Style, Mexican Decor, Asian Decor, Texas Ranch Style, Traditional 18th Century, Tuscan Style, Victorian Style, Mediterranean, Vintage 50’s Retro, Mid-century Modern, New Traditional (Barbara Barry) Other Period Styles (i.e. Beidermier, Chippendale Empire, Louis XIV).

If you are totally lost you could try taking this quiz at ivillage.com

Now, take a look at your own furniture and other objects. Which pieces have a style or color in common? Which have the most impact, either in terms of size, color or design? Which have the most meaning? Are there other rooms where some pieces could be put to better use? Most important, is there something — a rug, a picture, a vase — that you love enough to build a room around?
