I’m going to continue talking about the process of establishing your style direction. You may want to scroll back and read or reread the last few posts.
Another thing that will help you is a lot of looking. Magazines, internet, showcase home tours and stores all present opportunities for you to learn your style preferences. Pulling out magazine pages of the things that appeal to you will help solidify your direction. I love the above photos from Century’s New Traditional collection because they capsulize some nice new approaches. Click on them to see the rooms in more detail.
It may well be that you end up getting rid of a few things during this process; it may be that you purchase some new things, too. But they should be purchases that will support and enhance the decisions you’ve already made about your style direction.
If you are making decisions, you’ve made headway in developing your own personal style. First, it may be an idealized you. Then this outline will gradually be filled in with actual furniture, artwork and decorative pieces you love.
