So, does it work to decorate health care facilities in soothing colors? Can comfortable surroundings really affect a person’s reaction to their experience? I wondered as I waited in the dentist’s reception area last week for my husband to have his first root canal. The poor guy is one of those people who turns pale at the mere thought of a dentist’s drill, so he has made a point of avoiding them. Now that he was paying the price, I wondered if the caramel colored walls, warm woodwork and stained glass panels would help him forget his earlier associations. I watched for signs of panic as he came back through the door.

“So — how’d it go,” I said. My husband replied: “It wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought.”

I guess there’s your answer.
