Versatile Velvet
Posted on September 14th, 2018 by Toms Price Home.
There’s something about velvet. Sumptuous. Sophisticated. Lush and plush. No wonder people are talking about wrapping themselves up in versatile velvet these days with their home decor.
Velvet is back in a big way. Velvet fabrics “are on the upswing trending in both fashion and the home,” says Erin Tsucalas, Upholstery Merchandiser for Lexington furniture collections, one of the dozens of fine furniture brands available at Toms-Price.
Why the sudden resurgence in velvet? The truth is it never really went away. “But now velvet has a different level of importance,” says Michael Delgaudio, Creative Director at upscale furniture maker Marge Carson. “There’s no question, we’re seeing more and more of it.”

Today’s velvets aren’t your parents’ velvets. Thanks to modern manufacturing methods, velvet fabrics are more low maintenance. But according to Delgaudio, velvet’s popularity is about a lot more than ease of care. The appeal is in large part because “velvet has a wonderful tactile quality. It’s a fabulous medium to touch.” We couldn’t agree more. When you rub your fingers over velvet – on a chair arm, a sofa cushion or a pillow, not only does it feel soft – but it looks soft, too.
Delgaudio adds that velvet reflects light differently too. “It exudes a richness. There’a a high-end kind of thing about it.” Today’s velvets are available in a variety of textiles–cotton, linen, silk, even polyester – at an array of price points. Marge Carson’s Delgaudio loves their quilted velvet fabrics.

Velvet is so versatile, it can be used in almost any setting– from traditional to contemporary. Among the selection of velvet fabrics which are offered by renowned Stickley furniture are gorgeous patterns, including geometrics and stripes.

Design bloggers are wild about the idea of a velvet sofa or a big side chair as a statement piece or using velvet on accent pieces such as an ottoman or pillows. Mixed with other fabrics, velvet creates a layer of warmth and luxury. In fact, juxtaposed with”rougher” materials such as metals or woven materials, velvet adds a whole new dimension of visual interest. The range of colors available has grown substantially, too. Imagine any one of these luscious colors on an accent pillow or chair.

Low maintenance and wonderful tactile quality!! What could be better than that? Glad velvet’s making a comeback!
I absolutely love the feel of velvet. I have a modern statement chair that I want to have reupholstered and after reading this, I’m going with velvet. Thanks for the design tip!
So informative – I am inspired to use the Baker fabrics for accent pillows I need .
I’ve always loved the texture of velvet, but thought of it it was a super high-maintenance fabric–I’ll have to stop in and check out the new-and-improved velvet!
