Quite Right, Quite White

Posted on February 17th, 2009 by Toms Price Home.

I love my radio. Unlike television, I can stay entertained and informed without having to stay in one spot, which, as those who know me will attest, is not something I do well. So this morning I was listening with my usual half an ear when something made me stop in mid stride.
“What’s up with these people with all white walls in their homes?” the host was asking. “I mean, it doesn’t have to look like Pee Wee’s Play House, but I can’t imagine living without any color at all. Call us if you’re a person who has never painted a room anything but white.”
And they did. All kinds of people, with all kinds of reasons. I’d always supposed the biggest reason out there was Fear Of Color, but in fact it never came up. People like white, it seems, because they feel it makes their space look bigger. They like the brightness and the cleanness of it. And they like the freedom from commitment. One caller said she wanted to change her things around whenever she felt like it, without worrying about the wall color. And more than one person said that their open floor plan made it very difficult to start and stop with any color other than white.

Of course, color junkies like myself and the radio host would never survive with all white. I would have to rebel against its sterile perfection with a can of “desert sand” or “chocolate mocha” eventually. But for many of you, it’s the perfect environment. Quite white, too.
