Over the years it has dawned on me that the more specialized we become in our own particular disciplines, the greater the gulfs in understanding that begin to separate us. For me and my design colleagues, it is immediately apparent what height to hang a picture, what size upholstery is appropriate or what color will best complement a given situation. It’s not that there’s a formula or a set of rules to follow. We just know. I have known surgeons, engineers and economists to ponder these design questions and conclude that they are unanswerable. On the other hand, my pathetic understanding of the world of investing was proven once again during the annual review of my 401K plan.
