Each of my children had their own little tree in their rooms. It was theirs to decorate as they wished. When they were very young, I would help them and we would make ornaments for it out of cardboard and Styrofoam. These would be decorated with beans and macaroni that was glued in place and sometimes sprayed with color. As they grew, I encouraged them to give their tree a theme that had something to do with their current interest. My son covered his tree in matchbox cars, my oldest daughter in CD’s hung from colored ribbon, and the youngest, just hung clothes from her Barbie doll. AS they grew, their trees became more elaborate and it almost became a competition amongst them to see who could have the best looking tree.
