I generally don’t spend a lot of time in the design studio looking at fabrics. My focus, of necessity, is on what exists in the present, so I don’t often look at the special order possibilities. I indulged myself the other day, however, and as I rifled through the rows of samples I was struck by the quantity of geometrics, stripes, paisleys and solids that presented themselves, but hardly any flowers. Where have all the flowers gone?
Not that I’m a big flower person myself. My taste tends towards the tailored, but even a crisp suit needs a little contrast. I guess it’s the romance I miss. There’s something almost industrial about all those bold geometrics. The florals that do exist tend to be abstracted and retro looking. Since design trends are supposed to reflect our lifestyle, I guess that says something about our streamlined way of living. Still, I miss the occasional peony. I guess that’s called nostalgia.
