Welcome to 2019! A new year means exciting, new design trends. It’s always fun to discover what’s hot in home design, especially when you’re thinking about updating your home or designing a new one. Why should you want to know what the latest trends are? Not because you must embrace each and every one that comes along, but because you might\u00a0want to incorporate bits and pieces of some of them into your home’s decor. And even if you don’t want to give any of these 7 design trends for 2019 a try, you’ll gain a better understanding of the styles and colors that speak to you. In the process, you can develop a style that’s as unique as you are.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, here are some of the top design trends for 2019.<\/p>\n

<\/h6>\n

\"Century<\/a><\/p>\n

1. Comfort<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you remember the time when\u00a0living rooms were practically roped off, like museum halls, to be seen but not to be entered? That’s clearly not the case anymore! People are not only using every room in their homes, they want to be comfortable in them. To actually live in their living rooms, family rooms and, well, every room in the house. Families, couples and singles are finding comfort and warmth in a variety of ways, too \u2013 through softer colors and angles on furniture, aged patinas and feel-good fabrics such as faux fur and velvet.<\/p>\n

While “comfy” and “cozy” are 2019 buzz words, many individuals are not necessarily looking for a casual, farmhouse style. People “want a softer, elegant comfort,” as one designer put it in a recent article in the Chicago Tribune. The comfy Carver sofa<\/a> by Bernhardt Interiors, below, looks elegant but relaxed and the fur ottoman<\/a> in the foreground lends warmth and soothing comfort to the room.<\/p>\n

\"Colorful<\/h6>\n

2. Color\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

Drum roll please. Pantone’s 2019 color of the year<\/a> is the nature-inspired, vibrant hue Pantone calls Living Coral. The color symbolizes “our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits,” according to Pantone. Living Coral is a shout-out to the natural beauty of coral reefs. You probably don’t want to do your whole room in this color (or maybe you do?!), but pops of it on a chair fabric or even a pillow may be just what you need to warm up your home, says Mary Lawson<\/a>, designer at our Toms-Price Lincolnshire location.<\/p>\n

\"Living<\/a><\/p>\n

Until recently, neutrals have been on the cool side, but warm, neutral hues are making a comeback. Get ready for earthy, natural tones. Good Homes Magazine says sunbaked colors<\/a> are in \u2013 terracotta, sand, warm pinks, red and oranges. Houzz editor and writer Mitchell Parker predicts homeowners will be drawn to richer, darker hues such as navy and forest green. But some designers say other shades of green<\/a>\u00a0will be popular in interior design, too. The trend of indoor greenery will, excuse the pun, grow this year too, according to Real Simpl<\/a>e.<\/p>\n

\"Wesley<\/a><\/p>\n

One trend that embraces the later \u2013 greenery and nature, is Junglalow<\/a>. A combination of the words “jungle” and “bungalow”, it is the creation of designer, artist and New York Times best-selling author Justina Blakeney<\/a>. The style celebrates color, pattern, plants and the idea of personalizing your home. Think of it as a tropical and bohemian mash-up, like the photo above of the Social sofa<\/a> and Gracious Swivel<\/a> chairs by Wesley Hall. Again, you might not want your whole house \u2013 or even your whole room, to be decorated in Junglalow style, but you may want to find small, impactful ways to bring it into your home design to make your space more joyful and give it a more natural look and feel.<\/p>\n

\"Soft<\/a><\/h6>\n

3. Curve Appeal<\/strong><\/p>\n

We’re all used to the straight-edges of mid-century-inspired furniture, but curves are coming back with a little 1920s Art Deco glam. The photo above shows the rounded Penrose swivel chairs<\/a> by Michael Weiss for Vanguard. Designers and bloggers note this return to rounded edges and soft curves. Look for table tops with rounded edges, big, soft rounded arms on sofas, rounded-back chairs, even curves on cabinetry, ottomans and rugs.<\/p>\n

4. Faux Animal Prints<\/strong><\/p>\n

Animal prints have been gracing home decor for a while\u00a0now, and the look is not going away. Leopard, zebra and faux alligator prints are classics and when added in small doses can bring whimsy and interest to a room. Think about using them on rugs, sofas, chairs, ottomans and pillows. \"Layered<\/p>\n

5. Layering Rugs<\/strong><\/p>\n

You heard right. Layering rugs<\/a> is a thing. You know about layering clothing. Home design often takes a cue from fashion, and that’s the case right now with rugs. Start with a neutral carpet or rug as a base and add a patterned rug or two which ties in to your furniture. Try sheepskin, zebra print or a sisal rug. Leave space so you can see the contrasting colors and textures. Be careful where to place your rug layers. You don’t want to put them in a high traffic area where your guests can trip.<\/p>\n

6. Patterns<\/strong><\/p>\n

Look for lots of patterns in 2019.\u00a0 Florals and plaids are big, says Toms-Price designer Mary Lawson. A plaid could be fabulous on a rug\u00a0or a chair, says Mary. “It’ll give a traditional wing-back chair a modern twist.” Shown below are the dramatic Heathcliff chair<\/a> and Flynn sofa<\/a> by Wesley Hall.<\/p>\n

\"Curated<\/a><\/h6>\n

7. Mixing it up<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pairing furniture and accessories in an array of styles, colors, textures and patterns can definitely create an original, one-of-kind decor. In fact, mixing metals \u2013 silver, gold, brass or nickel, for example, is a trend in itself! Elle Decor<\/a> says mixing metals is a “timeless and tasteful way to create balance and definition.” Accents such as window treatments, rugs, throws and other accessories can help you create a curated look.
