Lucky you, if you have a home with a fireplace! A fireplace can be a wonderful focal point in a room, creating a welcoming, intimate spot for friends and family to gather. But arranging furniture in a room with a fireplace can be a challenge, especially if you use the room for other things such as watching television. And if you have a large screen TV, it can be even more daunting! But not to worry. We’ve snagged some great tips from our Tom-Price professional design staff, as well as a few design bloggers, to help you create the room of your dreams.<\/p>\r\n

Eight Tips For Designing A Room With A Fireplace<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

1. If you have a large room with a fireplace on the center of a wall, try placing your sofa opposite the fireplace, with smaller pieces such as arm chairs perpendicular to the sofa. 2. Two sofas facing each other and placed perpendicular to the\u00a0fireplace\u00a0with a coffee table in the middle can maximize your seating area and create an elegant, balanced look.\u00a0 If the room is on the small size, you can use two love seats instead of sofas. A rug, large enough to fit the furniture, will help define the space, add pizzazz and tie it all together. Be sure to place the rug and furniture a little distance from the fireplace so heat or sparks are not issues.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

3. The size and type of coffee table you use is also important when creating a gathering space by the fireplace. Think about whether you want a glass or wood coffee table or even a cushy ottoman. Your choice can add to the total ambiance in the room. 4. If you are using the room to watch TV, you may be able to mount the TV above the fireplace. But if that’s not a good option for you, Renata Gronkowksi<\/a>, designer at our Lincolnshire location, says to try to place the TV on the same wall as the fireplace–slightly to the left or right of it, so there is still one focal point. Incorporating swivel chairs\u00a0 in your setting is a good choice so your guests can enjoy watching TV or sitting around a cozy fire comfortably. The photo below shows the sofa and ottoman at an angle which accommodates both TV and fireplace viewing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

5. With a corner fireplace, sometimes it’s better to share the spotlight. Consider creating more than one seating area– perhaps, one near the fireplace and another for watching TV (or looking out the windows if you have a beautiful view).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

6. Nancy Falk<\/a>, designer at our Skokie\/Old Orchard location, likes the idea of creating a cozy reading nook with two chairs framing each side of a fireplace. Putting a mirror or picture above the fireplace will enhance the area even more.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
